These symptoms can affect your daily life and can also dramatically affect your relationship with your family and loved ones.
Warning signs of depression may include excessive thoughts of suicide or self harm, physical distress (chest pain, migraines, lethargy, twitches, and other somatic discomfort). Hallucinations and psychosis may also occur in times of severe, stressful situations. Such signs of depression need consultation with a psychiatrist immediately.
Depression can be caused by a variety of things. Although not fully understood, depression may be caused by stress, trauma, chemical imbalance, and/or hormonal imbalance. Depression may also be genetic.
Depression could also develop from problems of primary support and environmental factors. Those who live in a stressful environment tend to less ability to develop a strong composure. Victims of sexual, verbal, and physical abuse are also likely to develop depression years after the incident.
Substance abuse can also bring up depression, affecting neurons and hormones that regulate an emotional state. For instance, an imbalance in serotonin, dopamine, and nor-epinephrine, all of which are neurotransmitters will affect a person's mood.
A person's personality, for instance type A personality (to be discussed in a different page) which exhibit traits of aggressiveness, hostility, competitiveness, and perfectionism tend to develop depression due to “always wanting to be on top of everything”. These personalities also are linked to a higher prevalence of heart disease, much due to the stress caused by such expectations.
Depression can be treated pharmacologically with antidepressants and other medicine designed to correct chemical and hormonal imbalances, and also with non-pharmacological treatment such as behavioral therapy and counseling. For more information, refer to Help with Depression.
What is the first step in battling this debilitating illness? You must first determine whether you are indeed suffering from depression. Awareness and acceptance are the first step in being able to treat depression.
